“Ember Swift to Fulfill Chinese Dream”
ChartAttack Article, March 2007

“Canadian singer/songwriter Ember Swift took East Asian Studies at the University Of Toronto, learned Mandarin and dreamt of heading to the Orient. That dream, however, was delayed by another: becoming a professional musician. Over the last nine years, Swift has toured around the globe with her poignant, genre-melding music, and she has become a strong voice for causes of all kinds. Her latest release, The Dirty Pulse, is rife with catchy melodies, killer musicianship and tons of commentary that's as personal as it is political. Now Swift is about to combine her two dreams, by finally heading to Beijing, China in April...” (you can put the link on the .... or put “read more here” or whatever suits you best!)” read more

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Artist Ember Swift Travels to China to study Women in Music!

Prominent Canadian Feminist Indie Artist will travel to Beijing to research the experience of local underground female artists.

Toronto, February 21 st , 2006 - In April, Canadian born singer-songwriter Ember Swift will fulfill a lifelong dream by traveling to the People's Republic of China , staying in the city of Beijing for 3 months. She will be embarking on this journey to research the local music scene, focusing on comparing the experience of Beijing-based female artists who are pursuing music as a career on an underground level, as compared to the experience of Toronto-based female artists.

Ember, whose Chinese name is "Shi An Bei" and whose third language is Mandarin, has been long been fascinated by China, a country that is playing a bigger and bigger role on the world stage with every passing year. She graduated from the East Asian Studies Department of the University of Toronto in 1998 and did her undergraduate thesis on "Women's Role in Music in China throughout the 20th Century" .

While in Beijing, she intends to use her Chinese language skills to translate the lyrics and stories she hears by the women of Beijing and compile a series of songs and collaborations for an album based on this process -- an album that features both the fusion and comparison between the Western and the Eastern contemporary female "voice" in songwriting.

"Women in China don't yet experience the same degree of freedom to choose careers in non-traditional music, a facet of the industry that is still male-dominated. But I have discovered there are voices of women who are daring to speak out about their lives.   Among other news, this year, China's first out lesbian artist, Qiao Qiao, emerged on the scene. These are the beginnings of feminism in music in China." - Ember Swift

Ember's own career has now spanned more than a decade , four countries, nine album releases, one DVD project, an average of 150 shows per year since 2000, and over 50,000 units sold independently through her own independent record label, Few'll Ignite Sound. Her music has recently been heard on the highly popular American T.V. series The L-Word , and the international organization PETA recently featured Ember in an ad campaign which ran in various North American publications.
